4/30/2023 0 Comments Vcu swipes![]() I also always see people at the end of the semester handing out swipes like candy as well. That way you know for sure that VCU isn’t getting ridiculously overcompensated for a meal (such as the Panda Express example) that they didn’t even make. I also think that swipes shouldn’t be able to be used for a meal at places like franchised restaurants. For example, I prefer to load my Starbucks app only when I know I am going to order a drink that day. For example, instead of having those ridiculous swipes, you should just be able to reload swipes to your VCU card in whatever amount you want. I honestly wish they would just phase out “meal plans” altogether. I also prefer to pack my own meals or to eat at the locally-owned shops in the area. It would be really impractical for me, who only schedules classes that end at or around 2 a the latest, to be able to use a decent enough amount of swipes or dining dollars to feel like that investment is worth it. My last reason is when they don’t have the full menu available for swipes it is always the worst things, for instance, one of the workers at Freshii told me “they literally put the worst things from the normal on the swipe menu you might as well use dining dollars.” I realize some of these might be unpreventable like the meals not totaling $8.66 but others, like the swipe menus and times, could definitely be changed.Īs a commuting student, I decided against buying a meal plan for this exact reason. Another example is at Panda Express if you get the honey walnut shrimp you have to pay an extra swipe even though it is normally an extra charge of $1.25. A swipe is supposed to be worth about $8.66 but in most cases what VCU offers is worth less than that amount, for instance, the “premium desserts” at Shafer are a swipe each which is ridiculous in my opinion. If you are a freshman on campus you have to have at least 200 swipes, which for me is way too much because of the reasons I have previously mentioned and having dining dollars, so usually, people try to get some extra things that cost swipes in order to use them but in reality these things are not worth a swipe so you are still technically wasting money. Then there are the places that only do swipes once a week which makes the lines ridiculously long and makes it frustrating to get the food. Another reason the times are inconvenient is that the students that commute and have a meal plan have to stay on campus until they can actually use their swipes where they want. One of the reasons I do not like this is because most of the swipe times are at night and with the number of crime alerts we get we should all know that is not the ideal time to be out and about. I do not like that most places have specific times for swipes. ![]() ![]() I love that VCU has swipes because you can get a whole meal for just a swipe, but I do not like a lot of things about them.
